Transformative Healing with TDCS
What is tDCS : Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is an evidence-based, non-invasive neuromodulation technique for treating various neurological, neurodevelopmental, and psychiatric conditions. It involves a very mild form of brain stimulation that is short (30 minutes) and continuous. This painless procedure is administered while the person is awake and can be beneficially combined with other interventions like psychotherapy, pharmacological treatments, and physical therapy.
How does tDCS work?
tDCS uses a low electric current passing through two electrodes (anode and cathode) placed on the scalp. This changes regional cortical excitability to either excitation or inhibition. The stimulation modulates endogenous brain activity rather than directly activating neurons. tDCS works on two levels:
Immediate Effects
A change in resting membrane potential and neuronal firing rates occurs right after stimulation starts.
Long-term Effects
After several minutes, neuroplastic changes akin to long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) occur, lasting up to several hours post-stimulation and accumulating with repeated sessions.
Benefits of tDCS
With new developments in neuroscience, studies show that tDCS has the potential to refresh your brain, enhance its capability and have a better functioning brain. Its desired effects and outcomes will depend on which aspect of impairment or function is being targeted during your treatment.
